Removal is the first line on half our estimates and a job of its own on the rest. A skid steer with a breaker takes a driveway or a patio apart in a morning, the pieces are loaded into a dump trailer, and they go to the Horry County Solid Waste Authority on Highway 90 in Conway, where clean concrete is $15 a ton — a two-car driveway is roughly twelve to fifteen tons. Steel mesh and rebar get cut and pulled; the base gets regraded and compacted if a new slab is going in, or topsoiled and left for sod if it isn't. Inside the city we protect the public sidewalk and the curb, and if the apron is coming out we have the replacement permit in hand before the old one is broken.
Tight access is the Grand Strand's usual complication: a pool deck behind a screen enclosure, a patio behind a fence, a slab under a raised house. We take down and re-set a fence panel, bring in a walk-behind breaker and a mini skid steer through a 36-inch gate, and carry what has to be carried. We don't leave rubble at the curb — the county's pickup won't take it and the city will cite it — and we don't bury it in the yard, which is the other thing we dig up a lot.

Questions we get about concrete removal
Can I leave the old concrete at the curb for pickup?
No — the county's curbside collection doesn't take construction debris and the city will cite a rubble pile. It has to go to the landfill, which is why hauling is in the price.
Do you need a permit to remove a driveway?
Not for the part on your lot. If the apron in the right-of-way is coming out, the replacement needs its permit, and inside the city the sidewalk and curb are protected during the work.
Can you remove a pool deck without wrecking the enclosure?
Yes — with a walk-behind breaker inside the cage and the pieces carried out, or one screen panel removed and reset. It takes longer, and it's priced as tight access.
What about the old slab under my house?
Slabs under raised houses come out in pieces with hand tools and a small breaker; it's slow work and we price it by the hour after looking.
